Mestre Fantasma – Simon Atkinson: Co-Director and Strategic Visionary

Simon Atkinson, known in the Capoeira world as Mestre Fantasma, is the co-director and strategic architect of the Afro-Cuban Dance Festival (ACDF). While his partner, Luanda Pau, drives the artistic vision, Simon provided the crucial business and developmental framework that allowed the ACDF to grow into a major international event.

Festival Development and Strategy: As a graduate of the School for Social Entrepreneurs, Simon applied his strategic and organizational expertise to build the infrastructure that has seen the ACDF successfully double its participation over the past decade. His hands-on dedication, which included managing logistics and fostering community, was instrumental in transforming the festival from a concept into a sustainable, growing enterprise.

Capoeira and Cultural Bridge: Having started his Capoeira practice in 1982, Simon continues to teach refined techniques, ideas, and postures in London, building a diverse global community. His unique passion for the Rumba cycle is key, as he recognizes its deep historical and rhythmic similarities to Brazilian Capoeira. This cross-cultural insight underpins the ACDF's philosophy of unity across Afro-diasporic traditions.

Mestre Fantasma’s leadership is defined by a commitment to research, practice, and the development of strong, globally connected students, making him an essential force in the cultural and logistical success of the festival.
